World First B Corps for Local Vet
At a time when poor corporate behaviour seems to be constantly in the news here at home and around the world, it’s well worth celebrating those businesses that are driving a different path – that work on the principle that you can have a good business as well as being a business that is driven by doing good.
Cherished Pets Community Veterinary Care on the Bellarine Peninsula has become the first vet service to become a Certified B Corporation. Cherished Pets provides vet care for companion pets, providing in-home vet and pet care services, end-of-life and pet care plans for aged pet owners and the pets of people with disability. The business supports a registered charity, Cherished Pets Foundation, matching volunteers with vulnerable pet owners and helps re-home pets when owners are too ill to care for them.
B Corps are leaders of a global movement of businesses that are choosing to be the change they want to see in the world. Certified by non-profit organisation B Lab, these businesses undergo a rigorous certification process to prove they operate under higher standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability.
Cherished Pets joins global companies such as Ben and Jerry’s ice cream and adventure clothing brand Patagonia, as well as local businesses, law firm Harwood Andrews, children's clothing brand Oish-m and environmental consulting firm Landserv in becoming B Corps.
Dr Alicia Kennedy established Cherished Pets in 2015 after more than 34 years in the vet industry.
“This is a very exciting step for Cherished Pets and validates our business model of using our profits for social good,” Ms Kennedy said.
She said achieving B Corp Certification was a founding goal of the business, as the certification process provided a framework for socially and environmentally ethical practice that aligned closely with the company’s social mission to support companion pets of vulnerable people.
Now that’s good business.
