Stand Up and Play

For James Gribble, an accident in 2008 left him a quadriplegic, but he was determined it wouldn’t take away his ability to play sport. As you can imagine, playing a sport like golf is hard to do from a chair, so James started searching for assistive technologies that would get him back in the swing.

He discovered the ParaGolfer, a supportive mobile device that lifts the player into a standing position. James formed the charity, Empower Golf, and is pioneering the use of ParaGolfers in Australia.

Local disability organisation genU Karingal St Laurence wants to provide local people with the opportunity to reconnect with the game by using a ParaGolfer and will be hosting the Stand Up and Play charity golf day in May.

The event will raise money towards the purchase of a ParaGolfer machine, which James describes as, “an all-terrain revolutionary mobility device, which manoeuvres individuals into the standing position to replicate the full golfing experience, whether accessing most bunkers or putting greens.

"Golf is the only sport with the unique handicap system that allows individuals to enjoy and compete irrespective of age, gender or ability,” he said. “It delivers physical, mental and psychological benefits as well as a sense of community, which is key for overall health and quality of life. It is also, arguably, the only lifelong sport.”

But James and genU can’t do this alone; they need our help. Individual hole sponsors, as well as logo and branding opportunities are available and come with entry for two players, a golf cart, lunch and gourmet BBQ dinner.

It’s a golf day with a difference and a chance for you to share your love of the sport.

James told of a recent experience with a man who had been wheelchair-bound for over 20 years, in tears after his first session in the ParaGolfer.

“Not only was he standing upright again after all that time, but returning to his favourite sport, one he thought he had lost forever."

James said he was thrilled that a ParaGolfer might soon be available to use within the local region.

Entries are now open for the Stand Up and Play Golf Day, a genU Inclusion charity event (in partnership with TAC) at The Sands, Torquay.
